Review: Etude House Wonder Pore Freshner

5:02 PM

Today's review will not be beauty or music, but rather skincare. Let me introduce you (you probably already know it) the famous Etude House Wonder Pore Freshner!

So this product has two versions if i'm not wrong, the 7 in 1 version, and the more recent 10 in 1 version, which is the one i'll be reviewing. They are basically the same thing, the 10 in 1 just has three extra "benefits"

Product description and claims:
(from etudehouse.com)

(7-in-1) total pore solution freshener for intensive pore care.
Made of Anti Pore-Dex Complex & Astringentlex: For tightening up pores effectively

Volume: 500 ml

The 10-in-1 claims that come imprinted on the packaging

  • Balance skin's pH level
  • Refine skin tones
  • Keep elasticity of pores
  • Remove skin surface's dead skin cells
  • Cleanse pore insides with cooling effect
  • Deep cleanse pores
  • Minimize appearance or pores (I think they meant OF instead of OR, but i'm not sure)
  • Control a large amount of sebum
  • Moisturize inside and outside of skin
  • Complete smooth glass-like texture
(I'm pretty sure some of them are just repetitions of previous points.)

Ingredients:
WATER, ALCOHOL, BUTYLENE GLYCOL, BETAINE, MENTHA ARVENSIS EXTRACT, VACCINIUM MYRTILLUS FRUIT/ LEAF EXTRACT, SACCHARUM OFFICINARUM (SUGAR CANE) EXTRACT, CITRUS MEDICA LIMONUM (LEMON) FRUIT EXTRACT, CITRUS AURANTIUM DULCIS (ORANGE) FRUIT EXTRACT, CHAM- AECYPARIS OBTUSA WATER, GINKGO BILOBA LEAF EXTRACT, ACER SACCHARUM (SUGAR MAPLE) EXTRACT, GENTIANA LU- TEA ROOT EXTRACT, ARTEMISIA ABSINTHIUM EXTRACT, ARNICA MONTANA FLOWER EXTRACT, ACHILLEA MILLEFOLIUM EXTRACT, GLYCERETH-26, GLYCERIN, ETHYLHEXYLGLYCERIN, SODIUM HYALURONATE, ACETIC ACID, DISODIUM EDTA, PHENOXYETHANOL

Most of the ingredients are green and a few are yellow on CosDNA, so it's safe ^_^ No worries buddies~
HOWEVER, notice that this toner contains alcohol, which is why if you have very sensitive skin you might want to rethink about purchasing this product.

Packaging:
So one of the best things about this Freshner is without a doubt the packaging. It's a sturdy plastic bottle, and comes with that "button" where you simply need to press using a cotton pad to get the product. This is great because it's easy and convenient, and you won't get too much product and therefore it will last a long time. PLUS, i'm obsessed with the colour blue so this packaging is perfect for me.

I got mine in Korea, so it came with a box of cotton pads and a sprayer. Depending on where you get it, you may get just the toner or the whole pack like me.

I personally don't use any of these because I have my own cotton pads, and I like to save these cotton pads for DIY sheet masks. The sprayer is to spray the freshner on your face throughout the day to control the sebum and oiliness, even though I don't do this, you could give it a try!

The bottle comes with a meter, which indicates how long it takes for the blackheads to disappear. According to this, you will only get rid of the blackheads once you finish the bottle, which I believe will take more than a year depending on how often you use it. I ignore this meter, i'm pretty sure it's just a cute decoration.

How I use it:
I like to use this product right after I cleanse my face, so usually once or twice a day. This way works for me, however i've learnt that this is to harsh on some skins on other blog reviews. I wouldn't recommend daily use if you have dry or sensitive skin, but if you have oily/combination skin it should be fine.
I usually use one pump, and swipe it across my clean face. Once that is done, I apply the rest of my
skincare routine.

Consistency:
Very watery. Actually, feels just like water to me.

Performance:
At first I saw NO results at all. However, the more you use it, the more you will notice your pores tightening. I started noticing the effect about 2-3 months after including it on my skincare routine. I definitely think it has helped me get rid of my blackheads. I used to have A LOT of ugly ass black heads on my nose, and now they are all gone. I don't think it was solely this product's work, but I believe it was the main cause.

(After swiping it on my face after cleansing in the morning.)

As you can see, the toner has picked up some dirt and other residues left on my skin. I have oily skin, so it's pretty impressive.

As for all those 10 claims, I would say most of them are unnoticeable. I believe that my pores have tightened and that the freshner helps a deeper cleanse. As for the moisturizing effect and the sebum control? Not really.......But of course, it depends on the skin type. What didn't work on me can perfectly work on you.

Pros:
-Easy to use
-For 500ml, it is pretty cheap. You can usually get it for about 15$/€13
-Tightens pores
-Reduces blackheads
-Great packaging
-Odorless
-It contains A LOT of product. I've been using this for 6 months almost everyday and i'm about 3/4 through.

Cons:
-Contains alcohol
-Doesn't control oiliness for very long, or at all
-Takes a lot of time to start having an effect
-Didn't do a thing for my cousin, so yeah....it really depends on the skin type.

Conclusion:
I will continue using this freshner, because it cleans the extra bits and pieces my facial cleanser can't reach. Now i'm not sure if i'll repurchase, since this is so large i'll probably finish this next year and by that time there will be many more great toners and freshners that might beat this one for me. Works great on oily skin, however on oily skins it takes years to start working. Might be harsh on sensitive skin, but the effects will come faster.

Score
7/10

  3. I have never been one for using toners because of the alcohol content, but if you say it's done so much for your blackheads I think I need to try it! My nose and chin are my biggest problem areas for black heads. It can be embarrassing if I'm not wearing any foundation.

    1. This toner helped my blackheads for sure. Something else that's also great for blackheads is the holika holika 3 step nose strips (I might write a review of it). Also, I started using my nails to "scratch" while cleansing on my nose area to properly exfoliate that area and help reduce blackheads, however if you have sensitive or very thin skin I don't recommend this. We all have blackheads, don't need to be embarrassed ^_^ Good luck!!

  8. Impressive that it actually tightens pores. I've been using an acidic toner and I think it's been helping to keep new blackheads away but doesn't do anything for pore size. --Angela

    1. I think it really depends on skin type and the product. I feel like it has shrinked my pores, at least they look a lot "smoother" or "blurrier" :P

  12. I think the packaging is wonderful as it makes it really easy and mess-free! Don't really see my pores getting smaller, but it definitely does reduce the oils on my skin.

  15. I bought this freshner because I saw it on sale and I was able to find so many good reviews about it, so without looking through the ingredients, I immediately bought it. But later on, when I checked it out, alcohol was a top ingredient! It made me hesitant to use it because I knew how it could be drying on the skin, but since I read a few articles saying that alcohol content in toners should be okay for as long as you use other moisturizing products along with it, I decided to give it a try. What I do, I go on to my essence right away, after my freshner has dissolved on my face. So far, I don't think it's as bad as it seems. Since I put on other moisturizing skin care products, the effect of its alcohol content isn't very alarming (at least in my case).

I'll be posting my review on this on my blog soon! For now, hope you can check out my other blog posts at nomadicbeautybuddy.blogspot.com
